1700 – 1715

Louis XIV

De Louis XIV stijl is een Barok-stijl vernoemd naar de Franse koning Lodewijk XIV, de Zonnekoning, die regeerde van 1643 tot 1715. De Lodewijk XIV-stijl is zwaar, pompeus en symmetrisch. Een veel gebruikt motief is het acanthusblad. De kuiven zijn, als groot bovenstuk, veelal los van de lijst gemaakt. De spiegelzaal van het beroemde kasteel van Versailles is een toonbeeld van deze stijl en tijdgeest.

17e eeuw – 18e eeuw

Italiaanse spiegels

Van Venetiaanse spiegels, zwarte rechte spiegelljisten uit de 17e eeuw tot rijkelijk gestoken bladgoud vergulde spiegels. Veelal zijn de vergulde spiegels uit de 18e eeuw net wat rijkelijker en verfijnder dan hun Franse tijdgenoten.

Venetië staat natuurlijk op nummer 1, als je het hebt over spiegelateliers. Daarnaast zijn veel mooie spiegels oorspronkelijk in het Noorden van Italië gemaakt, en dan vooral in Toscane.

1715 – 1730

Regence

Dit is de overgangsperiode in de franse geschiedenis tussen 1715 en 1723, toen het land in naam van de minderjarige koning Lodewijk XV werd bestuurd door de regent Filips van Orléans. Meer nadruk op raffinement. De logge, pompeuze, symmetrische barok maakt langzaam maar zeker plaats voor meer luchtige en speelse vormen van decoratie, om onder Lodewijk XV uit te monden in de frivole Rococo. Kenmerkend zijn het schub- en schelpmotief, dierenfiguren en opkrullende bladeren.

19e eeuws

Spiegels in de stijl van Louis XV

Zoals gezegd is elke spiegel uit de 18e eeuw een reflectie van een tijdsbeeld, veelal beïnvloed door de stijl van de heersende vorst. Waar de 18e eeuwse spiegellijsten hand gestoken zijn, is de 19e eeuwse “pâte-tegenhanger” minder bewerkelijk maar nog steeds een waar stuk vakmanschap. De profilering van de lijst is van hout. De ornamenten en kuif zijn nu gemaakt van pâte met een basis van ijzer. De eeuwenoude techniek van vergulding is ook hier gebruikt.
Voor deze spiegels uit de 19e eeuw is de vormentaal uit de 18e eeuw dé inspiratiebron. Zo kan je een spiegel uit de 19e eeuw hebben die gemaakt is in de stijl van Louis XV of van Louis XVI maar die niet uit de tijd is van de betreffende koning.
